The days are getting longer, the birds are getting louder, and—if you look closely at that shaft of sunlight hitting your living room—the dust is getting a lot more visible.
Spring cleaning isn't just a tradition; it’s a mental reset. But staring at your whole house can feel overwhelming. To help you dive in, we’ve rounded up the 10 high-impact tasks that often get skipped during the weekly "quick wipe-down" but make the biggest difference in your home’s air quality and sparkle.
1. Deep Clean the "Hidden" Kitchen Grease
We all wipe the counters, but when was the last time you looked at your range hood filter? Soak those metal grates in hot water and degreasing soap. While you’re at it, wipe down the tops of your kitchen cabinets; they collect a sticky film of dust and cooking oil that can start to smell over time.
2. Give Your Windows a New View
Winter grime can block a surprising amount of natural light.
The Glass: Use a squeegee and a simple vinegar-water solution for a streak-free finish.
The Tracks: Use an old toothbrush to scrub the gunk out of the window tracks.
The Screens: Pop them out and spray them down with a hose outside.
3. Sanitize Your Tech and Touchpoints
Think about how many times a day you touch your light switches, doorknobs, and remote controls. These are bacteria hotspots. Use a microfiber cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol to give every "touchpoint" in the house a thorough sanitizing.
4. Refresh Your Soft Goods
Most people wash their sheets, but spring is the time for the "heavy hitters":
Pillows: Most synthetic and down pillows are machine washable (check the tag!).
Curtains: Take them down and shake them out outside or run them through a gentle cycle to remove trapped allergens.
Area Rugs: Give them a deep steam clean or take them outside for a traditional beating.
5. Vacuum the "Impossible" Spots
Move the sofa. Slide the fridge out. You’d be amazed at what lives under there (mostly dust bunnies and maybe a missing sock or two). Cleaning behind and under large appliances also helps them run more efficiently by improving airflow.
6. Clean Your Dishwasher and Washing Machine
Yes, the machines that clean your things need cleaning too!
Dishwasher: Run a cycle with a bowl of white vinegar on the top rack to break down lime scale.
Washer: Clean the rubber seal (gasket) where mold loves to hide and run a "clean" cycle with specialized tablets or bleach.
7. Dust the "Sky High" Items
Grab a telescoping duster or a sturdy ladder.
Ceiling Fan Blades: Use an old pillowcase to slide over the blade; it catches the dust inside the bag instead of dropping it on your bed.
Light Fixtures: Wipe away the "bug graveyards" and dust film to instantly brighten your rooms.
8. Flip and Rotate Your Mattress
To prevent dips and extend the life of your mattress, give it a 180-degree flip or rotate. While the sheets are off, sprinkle the mattress with baking soda, let it sit for an hour to absorb odors, and vacuum it off.
9. Purge the Pantry and Fridge
Take everything out. Check expiration dates (looking at you, 2023 salad dressing) and wipe down the shelves. It’s much easier to eat healthy when you can actually see the back of the fridge!
10. Service Your HVAC and Change Filters
This is the most important task for your health. Replacing your furnace/AC filter ensures you aren't just blowing winter’s dust back into the air. If you have floor vents, vacuum out the debris that has fallen through the grates over the last few months.
Pro Tip: Don't try to do all ten in one day! Pick two tasks per weekend, or focus on one room at a time to avoid burnout.
